Nelda’s Tears (6 Pawns Me)- On St. Brendan the Voyager’s Day (May 16), the ghost of Nelda appears in Luce March near Glen Luce Abbey on the banks of Piltanton Burn. The Tears she brings to those who hear her lament shine with magica.

Many years ago Nelda, daughter to a rich and powerful chieftain, succumbed to the charms of a beautiful yet lowly shepherd. She fled her father’s house and his riches in order to marry her beloved Eadgar. Nelda and her lover were happy until the chieftain’s men found them and chased Eadgar out into the marsh. Nelda followed swiftly on but being lost, alone, and despairing she slipped into a stream and was drowned, never knowing if her beloved husband had lived or died.

The Standing Stones of Torhouse are a circle of nineteen granite boulders, three miles west of Wigtown. Local tradition maintains that it is the site of King Galdus’s Tomb. Galdus is believed to have fought off the Romans in A.D 80 and is credited as being the source of the name Galloway. The central stones are supposed to mark his burial place.

In the dyke near the stone circle is a stone with a deep cavity which, in ancient tradition, “the knowing never pass without depositing a stone or pebble therein, as a gift to pass in peace”. During Galloway’s horse fair, hundreds of stones are deposited in the cavity. Typically, three of these stones will contain a pawn of rego vis.

Description

The stones are set on their ends with three larger stones placed in a line in the middle. This is the only stone circle of its type in the Machars area and is of a type more akin to those found in northeast Scotland or southwest Ireland. The site is on slightly raised ground, and appears to have been used as a dumping ground for stones from neighbouring fields.

The diameter of the circle is between 61 and 66 feet, and the stones lie at distances of between 5 and 11 feet from one another on the perimeter. The stones on the west side are smaller and are more closely grouped than those on the east. The three boulders on the interior of the circle (an unusual feature in stone circles) comprise one comparatively small stone in the centre flanked by two greater stones. The central stone is slightly tilted and is 2 feet 10 inches tall. Its two neighbours measure 3 feet 4 inches and 3 feet 9 inches. The direction of the line of the three central stones is northeast to southwest.

Three standing stones to the north supposedly mark the burial sites of three of Galdus’s generals who died with him in battle. Nearby are several cairns which it is believed mark the burial place of his common soldiers.

The area within the stones has a faerie aura, through no faeries are known to inhabit the site.

Famhair Stane
The Famhair Stane stands on the west coast of Galloway, near the nebulous border with Carrick.

Long, long ago, before the great flood, this island was ruled by giants called the famhair. They lived, warred and loved as men do now. They studied great magics, and their monuments may still be found if one has the eye to look for them. When the cruel flood came, their kingdoms were broken, for the famhair that remained were mighty, but few.

Before long, men came to Britain. The magicians who were the wisest of the famhair knew that they could not stand before the tide of tiny, but oh so numerous, foes. One of them took himself far away to gaze in the waters and see the future of the kings of men. Such a great spell could not be cast elsewhere but in the great western ocean, wherein lost Atlantis lies.

Possible Vis Sources

Lake of Mists
Deep in the woodlands there is a hidden lake whose surface is always shrouded in mist; it is very difficult to locate for this reason. Lilies grow along the shore and flower in late Spring; most of the flowers are white, but a few seem to shiver in the shrouded air. These may be harvested for Imaginem Vis. In a typical spring 1-8 of these special flowers may be found.

The local mundanes are ignorant of the lake’s location, but a tale told in villages nearby speaks of a lordling who found a hidden lake, shrouded in mists, and was seduced by a beautiful water faerie dwelling there. After one night with her, he returned to civilization to find that a generation had passed while he slumbered.

Corpse Wax
In Kirkmadrine in the Rhinns, there is an old pagan cemetery in which the dead of a local village are interred to this day, there are bodies buried from an age long before any of the local mundanes can remember. Though the local parish priest has consecrated the graveyard for the church, the hallowing did not work properly for unknown reasons. Over time, the fat of corpses buried here, unless given a church burial, transforms into a pale gray corpse wax.

Ship of Woe
Twenty fathoms beneath the waves in the Solway Firth lies the wreck of an old slave galley. This vessel was sunk in heavy seas and dashed to pieces upon a nearby reef. Approximately twenty skeletons remain here, still chained to the oars of this ship of woe. The galley is ancient in design, but that it has endured so long in so pristine a condition is noteworthy in itself.

The chains holding the skeletons are of interest, however, as each cubit of chain contains a pawn of Rego vis.

Ruins of Birrens Fort
North of Annan and southeast of Lochmaben are the ruins of an ancient roman-celtic fortress, where the bones of fallen soldiers from some ancient battle can be found. Each attempt to search the ruins yields 1d10 pawns of Corpus vis in bones per year. These can be collected in any season but winter. As long as a year has passed since the bones were collected, there will always be bones here that can be collected. Where they continually come from is a mystery.
